Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing video review systems.

Video review technology are set to arrive at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to contest specific calls from the chair umpire, following the protocol already in operation at each of the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to dispute the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but they can request the official to review other decisions, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Potential hindrance end of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Practical Application

A recent incident occurred in Indian Wells recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire viewed a video and determined Draper was guilty of hindrance, awarding the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses situations where the crowd have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

In other news, with exactly a century of days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily capacity at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
