An Compassion of Strangers: How a Gentleman I Barely Knew Helped Me Secure the Job That Transformed My Existence

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a companion. Since my friend was exploring starting a postgraduate program in the Big Apple, we had planned a fortnight visit there before heading to London.

We arrived at the student accommodation, a large multi-story edifice on the Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we grabbed food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Beside me was an individual of Iraqi origin pursuing an engineering degree at Columbia University. He asked me what I did, and I shared that I had just graduated with a scientific background and had been performing experiments using an electron microscope.

He noted that there was an microscopy facility at the institution – adjacent to the school of engineering, which was how he knew about it. He proposed that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, saying that I was heading off to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, coming back to the dining hall that evening. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had set up a meeting for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Given that he had gone to the trouble, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my host that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where opportunities abound – she declared: “We can make that happen. How soon can you begin?” I never got on that flight to London.

I held that position for 36 months. One of the benefits was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I used the opportunity to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his identity, but his incredible act of kindness changed my life in so many ways. I lacked the bravery or nerve to reach out at an Ivy League university and request employment. Additionally, I had consistently hoped to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I met my wonderful partner, with whom I currently share a family of four kids. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual changed my trajectory in life, and I’m always appreciative.
